In my experience, there are few things that are more exciting, thrilling, awakening and at times totally baffling than exploring a new part of the world. Experiencing new things in unfamiliar places is what we all get addicted to whilst travelling.

Whilst some people live in fear about what could potentially go wrong, shying away from the uncertainty and opting to lead a sheltered life at home, others go out there and aren’t afraid to seize all the incredible experiences this world has to offer us. Chances are if you’re checking out The Anti Theft Bag Co, then you’re part of the latter.

For the most part, the world is a pretty safe place for travellers. I for one have spent the equivalent of over 3 years travelling and living abroad and – touch wood – I’ve been extremely lucky to have eluded theft, or any other hairy situations where I have felt unsafe.

But, having said that, the risks are certainly real and I’ve learnt a thing or two along the way about staying safe and out of trouble. It is estimated, for example, that 400,000 pick-pocketing incidents occur each day worldwide. It’s wise to be prepared for whatever your travels may throw at you. Why wouldn’t you be prepared if all it involved was a little education and a few nifty travel gadgets that won’t break the bank?

I for one, love travelling solo which can be incredibly exhilarating but can also make you a bigger target for theft and scams. We’ve searched the web to bring you the best travel accessories for travelling solo and here are our top 10 for smart, safe travel!

1. Airbolt Smart Travel Lock

One potential pitfall of travelling solo is not having the eyes of your travel companions being able to watch your stuff whilst you’re in conversation, buying a train ticket, distracted or ducking into the bathroom. It’s a no brainer that luggage locks are important – even just for air transit, but locks have been slow to develop over the years and it’s about time someone shook that up a bit.

Introducing the AirBolt – a travel lock that you can control from your smartphone. Thanks to it’s customisable security settings and advanced technology, your can quickly and easily unlock your bag with a single push of a button, provided you’re the lock’s owner and that your smartphone is in close proximity.

Stay in control by sharing and managing access through your AirBolt app, set a backup password and track your belongings from the palm of your hand too using the crowd sourced location tracking.

Again, it’s a small investment towards your peace of mind and your wellbeing whilst travelling solo.

2. An Anti-Theft Backpack

We may be biased but there’s no way an anti theft backpack wasn’t going to make an appearance in this list!

But it’s no longer a matter of if you should have an anti theft backpack for your travels but instead the question is which one? 3. Spare Power Bank

In today’s day and age we do just about everything from the palm of our hand – looking up maps to our accommodation, translating a language, booking flights and other services, converting currencies, reading up on our new location, listening to music on long train rides, keeping in touch with family and friends back home… you name it!

I know when travelling I struggle to get through a day without needing to find a cafe or a plug in a train station to top up my phone with some charge.

Furthermore, I’ve often completely run my phone out of battery. When you’re already juggling a foreign language and currency, unfamiliar surroundings, not knowing anybody and many other considerations, a flat battery is the last thing you need. Not to mention how daunting it is to feel lost, disconnected or worse still – in potential danger.

There are also countries liable to regular power outages such as India, Nepal and parts of Africa.

What’s more, it’s not just our phone that needs charging – we are now travelling with more gadgets than ever before – tablets, cameras, rechargeable headphones, kindles, laptops, hand-held gaming devices…

The solution is super simple… and cheap too. It’s a power bank, so you can charge your gadgets on the go. There are a tonne of options on the market but from our research, there is one brand which is a complete stand out from its competition – Anker. There are all sorts of models, sizes, price points to suit the needs of every traveller and you can find them by clicking here.

*Shameless plug…* Many of our favourite anti theft backpacks have a USB charging port too so you can change on the go!

4. The Clever Travel Companion 100% Anti Theft Clothing

Tell me I wasn’t the only kid seeking out or inventing secret spaces to stash things? Meet the brand that helps us do exactly that and claims to be 100% pickpocket proof – The Clever Travel Companion. A giant leap forward from the infamous money belt, these guys have created anti theft products that help travellers to keep their belongings safe at all times, no matter where you go, for a hassle free trip. At The Anti Theft Bag Co, we’re all for that!

Supplement your anti theft backpack with a range of apparel that will help you keep your most valuable documents, cards and cash safe against your body, including men’s and women’s underwear, t-shirts, tanks, dresses, scarfs and leggings. The discrete pockets in built into each are just big enough to comfortably carry your necessities. Check out the full range by clicking here!

5. LifeStraw Go – Advanced Water Filter Bottle

Aside from protecting yourself from theft, part of travelling alone and staying safe is protecting yourself from falling ill and getting into further trouble as a result. Take it from someone who has experienced it first hand, there are few things worse that being sick whilst abroad and alone! It definitely pays to take precautions if you are in areas with a questionable water supply.

Utilising award-winning, state of the art technology, the household water bottle now has a new life. The bottles produced by LifeStraw are not only durable and lightweight, but they allow any fresh water source to become safe drinking water by removing dirt, bacteria and protozoan parasites without the use of chemicals or a power supply. Rivers, ponds, typically unsafe tap water can all become perfectly safe for drinking with the LifeStraw Go.

6. The Ultimate Travel Jacket by AyeGear

Not so dissimilar to The Clever Travel Companion, there are a few companies like AyeGear who specialise in pockets and pocket design, to bring you cutting edge apparel that makes travelling so much easier and more enjoyable.

One jacket that I deem to be quite revolutionary is the AyeGear J25 Jacket and Vest – sporting 25 pockets and detachable sleeves with some even calling it the product of the year! Believe it or not, this jacket includes 2 large internal zipped pockets spacious enough to keep your iPad/tablet or even 12” Mackbook safe and secure against your body. Despite the amount it can hold, it remains discreet, avoiding any kind of sagging or bulging that would be an obvious give away. The J25 is waterproof, windproof, lightweight and breathable, having been designed for both hot and cold climates.

There’s another company which got our attention as well with their impressive design and innovation and that’s SCOTTeVEST. Within their range, you’ll find a wide range of styles from fleecy or lightweight vests, through to heavy duty jackets for both men and women.

Invest in a good jacket now and it will be an investment for a lifetime of travel.

7. GoTenna Mesh SMS & GPS Device

If you’re anything like me when you’re travelling alone, you like to get into the nitty gritty of a place, and past the surface level touristy stuff. Sometimes though, this involves going without a few of life’s little luxuries and things we’ve come to expect – like WiFi and phone reception. I can count a few ‘hairy’ situations that I’ve experienced myself, including being stranded with no idea of transport, no phone reception and a closed office nearby Plitvice Lakes in Croatia… soaking wet and in heavy snow in the height of winter! Yep – just one of many times where I wish I had had one of these little babies!

Stay connected even when you’re off the grid with the goTenna Mesh. This nifty, pocket-sized device will allow you to send texts without cell service with its smart technology powering 1-to-1 communication, group chats and public emergency broadcasts. It’s weatherproof and has up to 24 hours of battery too. As an added bonus the free goTenna app which it syncs to includes detailed offline maps for any region in the world – incredibly handy! The GoTenna Mesh is absolutely perfect for hiking in areas where phone reception is unreliable and to avoid costly data plans while travelling internationally (been there done that too!)

When travelling solo, safety is paramount. By all means, go off grid and explore places unknown, but in today’s day and age, there’s no reason you can’t be smart about it as well.

8. Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM Portable Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

This travel gadget is absolutely iconic. Less safety inspired, but a necessity nonetheless! Traveling alone, exploring new cities and meeting a tonne of fellow wanderlusters is priceless… but let’s be honest, sometimes we just want to zone out in our hotel room or AirB&B with some tunes, catch up on washing, sync and organise our photos, or touch base back home. Chuck on some beats that aren’t just blasting out of your tiny phone speaker.

The UE WONDERBOOM is super-portable, wireless, waterproof, floatable and will deliver 10 hours of musical happiness on a single battery charge. Don’t let the size fool you though… it has surprisingly big, clear, crisp 360-degree sound and a pumping bass… which may turn into a night with company after all!

9. A Smartwatch… even if purely for selfies!

It’s no secret just how much the smart watch has transformed the way we travel and provided an endless list of apps and integrations to make travelling solo both safer and more enjoyable. It’s safe to say we could write an entire blog post, or even website on that alone!

If for no other reason though, a smart Watch, such as an Apple watch, can avoid a bunch of problems I can vouch for as a solo traveller, not least of which is the awkwardness and possible embarrassment of trying to take a selfie at a huge famous monument which hundreds of eyes on you. Try fitting the Eiffel Tower in a handheld selfie – good luck to you I say!

My favourite feature of my own smartwatch is being able to set up my phone somewhere nearby and click to take the shot from my wrist… trust me on this – it’s life changing. The result – selfies that are more than a headshot and better holiday snaps.

Do your research but at this stage, the Apple Watch still has my vote… or for something a little more classic but still with this particular hands-free selfie-taking feature, check out the Marc Jacobs Riley Hybrid Smartwatch.

10. A Personal Security Alarm

We certainly didn’t write this article with the intention for scarring anyone out of travelling. Anyone who knows me is aware I’m truly a happy-go-lucky kind of traveller! But there are a few genius inventions that are inexpensive and could potentially be life saving… This is one of them.

Despite living for the thrill of travelling, there are a few feelings I’d rather not experience if I didn’t have to! Walking home alone, accidentally stumbling into a dodgy part of town, or just generally having a ‘bad feeling’ are among them!

As a solo female traveller, I won’t be jet-setting again without one of these handy little personal security alarms. There are a variety of manufacturers and they are all roughly the same keychain size, a little bit larger than a USB.

So how does it work? Simply pull the metal pin out of the device to sound a 120-140dB alarm. It is designed to draw attention to you and to discourage would-be thieves or attackers to flee. The alarm will continue to sound until the pin is reinserted. Most are battery operated and many come with a flashlight as well.

11. Portable Door Lock & Portable Door Alarm

I like to think I know what to look for when shopping for an AirB&B or other accommodation but there have honestly been a few occasions where I’ve simply missed the mark and have slept a little uneasy! Be prepared for accommodation of any type or standard with a portable door lock, like this one from Addalock – priceless when travelling alone. Install in less than a minute and sleep soundly!

Another alternative is a portable door alarm. This nifty little contraption looks just like a fancy doorstop and works essentially the same way. When door pressure is applied, you’ll have an extremely loud 120dB alarm to alert you, deter your intruder and notify those around you. Heard up to 300 metres away, the non-skid feature of personal door alarms like the one from SABRE prevent the door from opening while the alarm sounds. It’s battery-operated and literally just involves placing down on the ground under the door.

That’s A Wrap!

Above all, remember that you travel to seek out the unknown and to experience places and cultures different from your own. In today’s day and age, we can have it all – the adventure, the exhilaration, the fun… all whilst being prepared for almost anything that could come out way.

There literally has never been a better time to get wandering and have the trip of a lifetime! Hope to see you somewhere out there making the most of all life has to offer!
